October Book Sale

The October Book Sale was our biggest sale ever. We raised over $7000 for the Milpitas Community Library. This money is made available entirely through the efforts of volunteers. We are grateful to the following individuals who volunteered their time during this book sale:

Maria Scoles, Margie Stephens, Sue Lapsys, Melanie McInerney, Annell Spencer, Pat Swain, Bessie Louie, Marilyn Hay, Jared Warland, Richard Swain, Ross Scoles, Eli Yani, Angela Boyton, Diane Davies, Michael Power, Judy Duffy, Lek Hei Cheong, Chris Mundwyler, Zachary Jacobson, Jenny Giang, Ben Mundwyler, Dina Jacobsen, Sibyl Wright, Alyssa Wong, Josephine Nguyen, Candy Yip, Sonya Yip, Sandy Daniels, Jeffrey Power, and Jami Bledsoe.

If you wish to join this group of volunteers, call the library at 262-1171 and leave your name and phone number so a member of FOML can contact you. You may also sign up to volunteer at a specific book sale by contacting the Adult Reference Desk and placing your name on the list to help.

Volunteers Needed for Next Measure Campaign

Over the years, budget cuts by state government have had a serious effect on our library. In response, ten years ago, voters overwhelmingly approved a measure that restored library hours and books. That measure expires in 2005. On the March 2, 2004 ballot, Library Measure B will ask voters to support $42 annually per residential home for seven years, an increase of only $8.34. Theses monies will only be used for hours, books, programs, and services. Without approval of 2/3 of the voters, the library will be closed one to two days per week. Currently, the library is open seven days a week. Other programs, such as story hours, reference services, and adult literacy would also be cut. Measure B, if passed, will keep our library strong. Please volunteer to assist in passing the library funding measure.

Friends Sponsored Programs

Because of the generous support from the Friends, the Library was able to host many very special programs this year. Two book groups now meet regularly. One is geared for adults and the other is for kids from 6th to 8th grades. Each group meets monthly for book discussion and sharing.

We also have a monthly movie discussion group. A full-length feature film is shown and the participants get to voice their comments at the end. Summer reading clubs for children and teens have become regular features on the Library calendar. Both are designed to encourage young people to continue reading throughout their summer vacation.

In the spring, Tuesday night family story time featured four special guest performances, including a puppet show, a story-teller, dancing and special music. This fall we offered two musical programs on weekends. One was a program of traditional Vietnamese music and one was a Chinese harp concert. Both played to standing-room only crowds of all ages.

Being able to offer such special programming is a real asset for any library and is a wonderful service for the community. Without support from FOML, the programming we could offer would be very different. Thanks to the ongoing efforts of the Friends, we plan to continue hosting special programs such as these.

Thank you Friends for your generous support.
