Friends Sponser Special Programs
FOML hosted a very successful program of Hawaiian music, dance, language and story in January. It was put on by Paul Kealoha Blake. A total of 75 people attended.
The Friends continue to hold two regular book groups, one for adults and the other for kids from 6th-8th grades.
Once again, the Friends will be sponsoring the Summer Reading Club for children and teens. The program is designed to encourage young people to continue reading throughout their summer vacation.

April Book Sale
The April Book Sale was a success. We raised over $6000 for the Milpitas Community Library. This money is made available entirely through the efforts of volunteers. We are grateful to the following individuals who volunteered their time during this book sale:
Maria Scoles, Margie Stephens, Diane Davis, Melanie McInerney, Annell Spencer, Dina Jacobsen, Bessie Louie, Marilyn Hay, Bernice Tate, Richard Swain, Ross Scoles, Eli Yani, Angela Boyton, Maria Nguyen, Michael Power, Judy Duffy, Lek Hei Cheong, Jeffrey Power, Sreelatha Chigurupati, Jenny Giang, Josephine Nguyen, Dina Jacobsen, Sibyl Wright, and Alyssa Wong.
If you wish to join this group of volunteers, call the library at 262-1171 and leave your name and phone number so a member of FOML can contact you. You may also sign up to volunteer at a specific book sale by contacting the Adult Reference Desk and placing your name on the list to help.
Volunteers Needed for Next Measure Campaign
Measure B, which would have added $5,200,000 to the County Library budget each year for the next seven years, did not pass on March 2nd. While it did receive over 60% of the votes, we needed a full 2/3 in order to enact it. As a result, the library is planning for a schedule of reduced hours and staff, which could happen as soon as November 1, 2004. The Milpitas Library could be closed for one or two days each week, and be open fewer hours on the days it is open. There will also be reductions in the programs that are offered and the numbers of books, videos and other materials that are purchased.
Plans are already underway to go back to the voters next year to ask again for this critical assessment. This could happen as early as June 2005 in a special election, or it could happen in November 2005. Either way, itfs not too early to start laying the groundwork. At this point we are creating a list of people who could help in any way with the next campaign. There are many ways to help, such as walking precincts and talking to people about the measure, passing out literature, staffing a table at community events to help get the word out, telephoning to ask the voters for support, or by accepting a lawn sign for your yard. If you or anyone in your family is interested in helping with this very important process, please call Linda Arbaugh at (408) 263-0897. Thank you!
Additional Book Sales
The one-day Computer and Cupid Book Sale in February raised $588. Thank you to everyone who helped and supported this sale. Look for our Summer Book Sale on Saturday, July 17th. Computer, math, technical and hardback fiction books will be on sale from 10:00-4:00 PM. All funds raised are used to support the library Childrenfs Program, Summer Reading Program, and Adult Program guest speakers, as well as materials and supplies that exceed the library budget.
