Library Update
The new library - to be located at 160 N. Main Street - is a bit closer to reality! The approved conceptual design is a combination of contemporary architecture and neo-classical architecture of the historic Milpitas Grammar School.
The new areas will have stacks for over 268,000 books and materials and greatly increased seating for readers, meetings, study, and computers. There will also be a Friends of the Library store, a section for children and a separate section for young adults, homework center, reference collection and audio/visual materials. The new library will be 60,000 square feet, over three times larger than the current library.

How is the Library Funded?
The primary source of revenue for the Santa Clara Library is from property tax paid by property owners in unincorporated areas and the nine cities served by the Library. Other funding comes from:
- A small annual per capita subsidy from the State Library
- Corporate and State grants to the adult literacy program
- Two cities that pay for enhanced services in their community library
- Fines and fees
The library receives more than $200,000 in contributions each year from Friends of the Library groups, individuals and trusts.
Measure A Passes in Special Election!
We are very pleased that the community has decided to continue its funding of the Milpitas Community Library so that we can maintain the level of service without further cuts in hours of operation.
Thank you to all of the voters and volunteers who worked so hard to support the library campaign! We now can count on Measure A funding for the next ten years.
The continuation of the assessment means we will not have to lay off any library staff. Programs and services can continue at the current level. The continuation of the assessment will also allow us to slightly increase our acquisition budget. It will still be below what we were able to spend two years ago before state take-aways. But we are happy to be able to add to our collection of books, periodicals, DVDs, CDs, and other items to serve our patrons' needs.
Linda Arbaugh, Community Librarian
